Beginning improv classes for people
who secretly suspect they might like it

“I really didn’t know anything about improv but with John’s process, I felt happy and safe to just jump in and learn. It was great fun :)”
— Suzy M.
Why learn improv if I know I don’t want to get onstage?
The short answer: Improv will wake you up, rewire your brain, and connect you with other people in a way that doesn’t normally happen, even if you never get onstage or play a show.
My name is John Ratliff. I’ve been teaching improv in Austin for more than 15 years, and I’ve taught a lot of people who aren’t interested in performing. Here’s what almost all of them have in common:
At the beginning of the first class, they’re really, really nervous.
By the last class they’re having a blast, and they often come back for more.
Mercury Improv classes are specifically designed for people who are drawn to improv but not necessarily to the idea of playing improv shows. I’m betting there are a lot more of you out there.
I don’t think everybody needs to become an improviser. But I strongly believe that most people would benefit from taking an improv class. Almost everyone who does winds up having a great experience, and at its best it’s truly transformative. Mostly, though, it’s just really fun.
Of course, I’m biased, because improv changed my life permanently and for the better. And obviously, I can’t guarantee that will happen if you take one of my classes.
But I can’t guarantee it won’t happen, either.
